Samantha’s role encompasses both undergraduate and postgraduate activities within the School of Medicine. Working as a Reader she is responsible for delivering the Masters in Wound Healing and Tissue Repair which continues to be held in regard both nationally and internationally. She also provides specialist advice on wound healing for the medical undergraduate programme.

She is the current External Examiner for the University of Huddersfield in the UK and has been a member of the International Skin Tear Advisory Panel since 2011 and is currently the President of the panel having previously represented the United Kingdom. She is also Chair of the Global Community Engagement Workstream for ISTAP and is a recent past member of the European Wound Management Association (EWMA) Council and past Chair of the Education Committee for EWMA providing advice on the educational activities of the association. She currently holds the position of the Chair of the EWMA Teacher Network.

Samantha is the Academic Editor for the Wounds UK journal and on the Editorial Board for the Chronic Wound Care supplement of the British Journal of Community Nursing. She also undertakes peer review of manuscripts for the same journal as well as the Journal of Tissue Viability, British Journal of Nursing, Journal of Wound Care and International Wound Care Journal. She has published / co-authored over 50 publications and has also supervised 50 Graduates to successful completion of the MSc in Wound Healing and Tissue Repair.

Urgent and necessary evidence-based treatment of skin tears

• Define a skin tear
• Discuss the first aid measures for an individual with a skin tear
• Describe the steps to take to cleanse and reapproximate a skin tear flap
• Recognise and classify different types of skin tears using the ISTAP Classification system
• Determine the most appropriate dressing to use for different types of skin tears

Abstract

This presentation will include discussion of the definition of a skin tear. It will also present the first aid measures for managing an individual with a skin tear.

The most appropriate methods for cleansing a skin tear and reapproximating a skin tear flap will also be discussed.

The International Skin Tear Advisory Panels classification will be described and how this can be applied to choosing the most appropriate treatment will be explored.
