Introducing a survey for clinicians on Surgical Wounds Healing by Secondary Intention (SWHSI)

You are invited to participate in an important survey designed for cross-specialty clinicians focusing on surgical wounds healing by secondary intention (SWHSI)

Introduction

SWHSIs are wounds that cannot be closed primarily due to infection, loss of soft tissue through trauma or necrosis, or dehiscence of a primarily closed wound. Unlike other open wounds, such as venous or diabetic ulcers, SWHSIs are characterised by their unique acuity and etiology.

Background

Clinical trials aiming to improve outcomes for individuals with SWHSIs explore a variety of interventions, including dressings, topical medications, antibiotics, medical devices, and service-based therapies. Despite their importance, these trials are often costly, face challenges in participant recruitment, and are frequently conducted in isolation, making it difficult to combine or compare findings across studies. Moreover, in clinical practice settings like outpatient departments, GP practices, and hospital wards, there is a lack of evidence-based outcome measures to assess the impact of interventions and services on the SWHSI population.

About the study

The study seeks to address these challenges by developing a consensus core outcome set (COS) for SWHSI research and clinical practice. Using an established and validated methodology, the aim is to identify a minimum set of essential outcomes that should be included in all future studies and clinical evaluations. This COS will enable better data synthesis and comparison across trials, ultimately enhancing the evidence base and improving patient care.

What does it involve

The survey takes around 10-15 minutes to complete and is about designing clinical trials in wounds research.

Deadline

The survey closes 1 November 2024
