Claire Hoggard, Tissue Viability Clinical Nurse Specialist, Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust

Claire is highly motivated and enthusiastic and enjoys the challenges that Tissue Viability and the Nursing profession presents. Throughout her nursing career since qualifying in 2000 she has gained a broad, clinical and professional knowledge base in all aspects of nursing practice working initially in a busy Emergency department and moving then into community nursing.

Over the years she has gained extensive experience within primary and secondary care as a Specialist Practitioner District Nurse working both clinically and strategically however, her specialism lies with pressure ulcer prevention and management, lower limb care and complex wound management including advanced therapies.

Claire became a TVN in 2005 and successfully completed the Tissue viability and wound management course at the University of Huddersfield in 2006. Throughout her career, she is fortunate to have had experience in Quality Improvement which has enhanced her ability to perform as a Senior Nurse Leader and has given her opportunities to focus on patient safety, patient experience and clinical effectiveness.

She is passionate about Tissue Viability and being able to make a difference and always strives to remain positive however challenging this may be. Her nursing journey is in its 25th year and yet there are so many opportunities within Tissue Viability to further develop and consolidate clinical and leadership skills to support the challenges and rewards of the future.

Claire is an Associate Member of the SoTV and North East TVN’s network and follows many Tissue Viability related social media platforms.

Objectives

This workshop is aimed at healthcare professionals who currently use NPWT in their practice to increase confidence in decision-making and troubleshooting common practical challenges.

  • To review the mechanisms of action and the therapeutic goals for Negative Pressure Wound Therapy for open and closed wounds
  • To be confident in decision-making of initiating NWPT and also to recognise when to discontinue therapy to ensure optimal patient outcomes
  • To have hands-on practice using a range of NPWT devices and disposables, and to workshop common challenges when using NPWT in clinical practice
