Amanda is a Team Lead podiatrist working in NHS Lothian.

She has been qualified for 21 years and has worked in Lothian for the whole of her career. Clinically, her speciality for the past 15 years is Wound Care and the High Risk Foot. She works in the Acute Diabetic Foot Clinics in the RIE and WGH.

Keeping feet healthy – hints and tips

Objectives

After attending this session, persons will be able to:

  • Identify common foot problems
  • Have some knowledge of the high risk foot and red flags to look out for
  • The role of the podiatrist
  • Basic footcare
  • When to refer on to a footcare professional

Abstract

The session will aim to give an overview of general foot health, common foot problems, how to care for the at risk foot and red flags to look out for when caring for the at risk population. The session will also give an overview of the role of a podiatrist in foot health and when a podiatrist should become involved in the care. Discussion around how to avoid common foot problems including hints and tips on keeping feet healthy and further how to self-care for common foot problems that don’t need seen by a podiatrist.

For conditions which require podiatric input, a discussion around what conditions require a referral to podiatry and how to identify these conditions.
