A clinical focus on managing skin fragility in adults

Our on-line educational sessions promote the best practices in skin health and wound healing

New to the Society of Tissue Viability’s virtual education programme

A clinical focus on….

There are approximately 3.8 million adults in the UK living with a wound, the consequence of which has a significant impact on a person’s quality of life, as well as adding a considerable financial burden on health care providers.

The unwarranted variation in the treatment of wounds and underuse of evidence-based practice is a contributing factor in delayed healing.

Building on the knowledge delivered in our fundamental programme, these clinical focus sessions will provide delegates with the evidence necessary to provide safe and effective treatment when caring for people at risk of skin breakdown, or for those who are currently living with a wound. The content will provide a more in depth focus on the topic being discussed.

Who are these clinical focus sessions aimed at?

All Registered nurses, specialists or not, working with patients that have or are at risk of developing vulnerable skin or wounds: Community/ primary and secondary care, care homes, prisons, schools, etc.

It will also be relevant to podiatrists, GPs, Nursing Associates, other HCPs, pre-registration students or back to practice clinicians who work regularly with patients with vulnerable skin or wounds.

A Clinical focus on the good and bad of exudate

Overview

The changes in the skin that occur because of aging affects the integrity of the skin making it more vulnerable to damage from shearing and friction, moisture and trauma. Dermatoporosis, a clinical condition leading to chronic skin fragility increases skin tear risk, with these injuries having a significant impact on the health and well-being of older people.

This session will provide delegates with relevant and useful information that will guide clinical decision making for both the prevention and management of skin fragility and the injuries that may occur because of it.

By attending this session, delegates will have a better understanding/awareness of:

  • The Anatomy & Physiology of aging skin
  • The importance of assessment in diagnosing dermatoporosis and skin fragility
  • The risk factors for sustaining a skin fragility injury
  • The common skin injuries associated with skin fragility
  • The clinical decision making around preventing and managing skin fragility injuries
  • The international guidance that can shape clinical practice
